CORPORATE CULTURE

FHLBank Indianapolis participates in many activities that give back to the community by matching employee donations to qualifying non-profit organizations and supporting qualifying non-profit organizations such as United Way. In addition, employees are encouraged to participate in community service projects, such as Habitat for Humanity and Indianapolis Public School #55.

Below are updates of the latest initiatives from our employee groups. 

Cultural Ambassadors Session – “Embracing Our Muslim Team Members”

The celebration of Ramadan is an excellent opportunity to share information about Islam and Muslim culture. On April 12, our Cultural Ambassadors employee group held an educational session “Embracing Our Muslim Team Members.” Our Cultural Ambassadors assist the bank in expanding our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

The session was led by speaker Rima Shahid, who has served as the Executive Director of Women4Change since 2017. “As we work to create more equitable workplaces, we need to understand and support the needs of all identities that have been marginalized or underserved. Muslims are arguably one of the most misunderstood identities in the Unites States, and as such, their needs are often overlooked. This can lead to a lowered sense of belonging, or feelings of being unsafe and discriminated against,” says Shahid.

Shahid shared that sensitivity to Muslim life and culture is key to being more inclusive. Actionable ideas included providing space for prayer/meditation, scheduling meetings around Friday prayers, and creating culturally sensitive menus that provide dietary options for Muslim employees. From this event, employees learned how to create a workplace that supports and embraces Muslim team members.
